Silk Painting Workshop – Petra Krpan

The silk painting workshop is for anyone who wants to learn the basic principles of designing and painting on silk and to explore, through hands-on work, different techniques for decorating this noble material. The workshop begins with a short theoretical introduction to the history and cultural value of silk. The tradition of raising, processing and painting silk in the territory of present-day Croatia dates back to the 18th century, and over the centuries silk has kept an important place in cultural and artistic heritage. Participants will get to know the different possibilities of painting on silk, both with and without a frame, as well as the basic materials, dyes, tools and preparation methods. Through practical exercises they will explore how colour penetrates and spreads through the silk fibres, and the possibilities of creating different effects, patterns and compositions. The central part of the workshop is devoted to independent creative work. Each participant will design their own motif and, under expert guidance, make a unique painted silk piece (a scarf, a shawl...). The programme will be adapted to the group's previous experience, interests and pace, so no prior knowledge or experience of silk painting is required. The aim of the workshop is to encourage creative expression and exploration, to develop a sense of colour, shape and composition, and to give participants the basic knowledge and practical skills to go on exploring silk painting techniques on their own.
