The novel "Tijesna zemlja" takes the reader to the late 19th century, the Austro-Hungarian era, in the village of Rakalj and its surroundings, Vodnjan, Labin and Pula. Across twenty chapters it traces a series of life stories, the changing seasons, births and deaths, rituals and celebrations, weddings and funerals – a world that is constantly changing yet remains firmly tied to the land.
