The exhibition "Selection from the Antun Motika Collection" opens on Friday, 6 November 2026 at 6:00 PM at the Pula City Gallery (Kandlerova 8). Free admission. It presents a selection from the donated works of Antun Motika, born in Pula and one of the most interesting modern artists of Istria and Croatia, gifted to the gallery by his nephew Dr Dušan Motika. The collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures in glass and terracotta, bronze medals, aluminium foils, painting experiments and twenty albums of drawings, photo collages and photo experiments. Particularly precious are the early works from Pula, Žminj and Pazin, and the illustrated stories "Crvena brada" and "Put na mjesec", created at the Pazin grammar school. Watercolours, gouaches and tempera works from 1929 to 1940 place Motika among Europe's post-impressionist intimists: airy, full of light, with reduced colour and a nostalgic mood, especially those made after his stays in Paris. More than fifteen hundred drawings and sketches, including studies for glass and ceramic sculptures, reveal an extremely modern, almost "pre-modern" artist whose drawings grow into pure abstract forms.
